Step-by-step

Step 1
You can see all the materials you need at a glance in this photo. Print out the template in a size that matches your piece of wood. In our example, we used the following pens: the edding 5400 acrylic 3D double liner in white, telemagenta, traffic yellow and opulent turquoise plus the medium edding 5100 acrylic marker in berry and yellow green. But there are many other colours to choose from, so just pick your favourites!

Step 2
First, prime your wooden board by giving it an undercoat. It will look best if you only coat two thirds of the board. To do this, keep the top third covered with a piece of masking tape. This will give you a straight edge later on. Next, paint the board using the wide tip of the turquoise double liner. The double liners can be used straightaway and don’t need to be activated. Leave the coloured areas to dry thoroughly before carefully peeling off the masking tape.

Step 3
Place the template and the carbon paper on the wood and use the pencil to transfer the design. Next, activate the acrylic markers as follows: shake the marker with the cap on until the mixing ball inside the pen starts to rattle. Remove the cap. With the marker facing down, gently pump the tip up and down on a piece of scrap paper until paint fills the nib.

Step 4
Neatly colour in the pre-drawn areas, section by section. In our example, we wrote the name of the dog in yellow green and drew the paws in berry. Leave the ink to dry thoroughly.

Step 5
The thin tip of the double liner is ideal for drawing fine outlines. The creamy colour paste ensures a fabulous 3D effect. You can see we used traffic yellow in the photo. By adding small touches in telemagenta you can give the paws a nice textured effect.

Step 6
Once your design is ready and the acrylic paint has dried thoroughly, pull some sturdy ribbon through both holes and hang up your sign using self-adhesive hooks.
