Decorate your plain salt and pepper shakers and end dinner time confusion

Although plain white salt and pepper shakers match with any porcelain service, they have one crucial drawback: how do you tell which is which? Step-by-step

Step 1

Before decorating, clean thoroughly in the dishwasher and use a detergent or methylated spirits to remove fingerprints or traces of grease. As you decorate, make sure there are no unnecessary fingerprints underneath the ink as you apply it. Only use the brushpen for decorative purposes and avoid decorating areas of the porcelain that are used for cutting, eating or drinking. For example, only decorate the rim of a plate or the outside of a mug.

Step 2

Try out different design ideas on a piece of paper before applying them to the porcelain. Alternatively, use the templates to sketch the letter outlines on the shakers, then colour in the letters. Fine lines are best achieved by holding the pen at a steep angle and lightly applying just the tip of the nib. If you accidentally draw a line incorrectly, use a damp cloth or a cotton bud to remove. To apply multiple colours without mixing the shades, allow the first colour to dry before applying the next.

Step 3

When you're happy with your design, place in a pre-heated oven: 25 minutes at 160°C. Leave to cool in the oven afterwards. After heat fixing, your painted salt and pepper designs will be dishwasher safe. Daily cleaning: avoid friction and rubbing by positioning the item in the dishwasher so that it's not in contact with other items of crockery or cutlery.
