Step-by-step

Step 1

You can see all the materials you need in this photo. The porcelain brush pens are available in 15 decorative colours, so pick your favourites. All kinds of porcelain plate are perfect for painting.

Step 2

For the best results, clean the plates with a cloth and methylated spirits to remove any fingerprints and dust.

Step 3

Think of several patterns you want to use as designs on your plates. Your options will basically depend on the decoration that’s already there. For example, you can add fine black lines to complement a floral border.

Step 4

You can also create a modern touch by going round the edge and adding mini whorls. If you make a mistake, you can remove any unwanted ink with a damp cloth or cotton bud. As long as you haven’t heat-fixed your design in the oven, you can make any changes you wish whenever you need to.

Individually designed words and inscriptions also look highly decorative around the rim of your plate.

Step 6

Little dots scattered around go brilliantly with a gold rim. Thanks to the flexible brush tip, you can apply tiny dots as well as larger swathes of colour.

Step 7

Once you’ve finished decorating, leave the paint to dry for 15 minutes before placing your crockery on a cold rack in a pre-heated oven at 160 °C for 25 minutes. Let it cool in the oven afterwards. This will make your design dishwasher-proof.
