Step-by-step

Step 1
Before you start, wash the fabric if it's new in order to remove any treatments or starches, and allow to dry. Print out the letter stencils in the size you want, and also your heart pattern. Place the cardboard inside the cushion cover so that the ink doesn't penetrate through to the reverse.

Step 2
If your letters are very small, use the fine nibbed edding 4600 textile pen. If you're working with various colours and don't want the colours to run together, let one colour dry before applying the next. For the heart motif you can use material with an existing heart or motif, or you can draw free-hand (or use a template) on plain material before attaching it to your cover in the desired space. Then cut the heart motif out of the structured fabric and sew it onto the cushion cover or pillow case.

Step 3
Finally, fix the design in place by ironing the cover without steam; this makes it wash-resistant up to 60°C. If you store the marker horizontally after use, you'll be able enjoy the intense colour and the pigmented ink for much longer. Horizontal storage prevents pigment collecting in the nib and blocking it and also prevents colour fading caused by pigment collecting at the end of the marker barrel.
