Tips & Tricks
With these tips, the next presentation will be an all-around success.
Master plan
Think strategically: What does the audience expect from the presentation? What should it know after the lecture that it didn't know before? How can, for example, the flipchart or whiteboard be used optimally? By clarifying these questions in advance, it is easier to work out a core message!
Practice by self-talk
Speaking content out loud helps to practice a lecture. This way you can determine where the structure does not yet run completely smoothly or which parts you stumble over. It is also important to plan on enough time for the final touch.
All comes down to nerve
Nervous before the start? That is completely normal. Keep your nerve before the presentation, relax the body, take a deep breath and then: Free the stage!
Matter of perspective
Be sure to keep eye contact! Face-to-face communication builds closeness to the audience, binds the listener and shows appreciation.
Posture grade
An upright, straight posture, an upright look away from the notes, a firm footing, legs shoulder-width apart and a new marker in your hand - this is how you show self-confidence with your presentation tools such as the flipchart, whiteboard or glass board and appear confident, open-minded and determined. If these conditions are met, you can be sure to present well, and that an empty pen will not bring you out of context.
Expressly desired
Alongside your body language, don't forget the facial expressions and gestures! A little smile in the right place, underlining a nice sketch or what is said with an arm movement helps to appear dynamic and confident!
Keep it short & simple
The audience remembers statements and information better if they are kept short and easy to understand or visualised. By avoiding unnecessary complexity and technical terms, chances increase that the lecture will remain a topic even days later.
Risk of contagion
Talking about topics that you yourself stand for, make it easier to convince and involve the audience and stimulate discussions.
Kickstart
Oftentimes a rhetorical question, exciting facts, a provocative thought, a quotation or simply an anecdote from everyday life can secure attention right off the start.
Pose questions
Interactive instead of just being there: Through questions, you actively involve your audience, stimulate the exchange and make them reflect and think.
Communicated at eye level
Nobody likes to be instructed: Picking up the listeners at their individual level of knowledge and pulling them along, makes you appear more humane and approachable.
Storytelling
A little story can illustrate a topic and make the lecture more believable and exciting.
Foot off the gas
Breaks for the audience: Speaking too quickly or monotonously, makes it difficult to be listened to. Short breathing pauses and emphases, by contrast, set small accents that unfold a great impact.
The big picture
Always think visually: Illustrating statements with the marker helps to make even complex connections understandable.
Grand finale
With a conclusion in the form of an inspiration, an outlook or something that stimulates reflection, a final point is made, and the presentation will be remembered for a long time.
Write expressively
Visualisations: Quick sketches or interesting images make a presentation exciting and understandable. Hardly any perfect presentation can do entirely without any words, however. With these simple but good tips, every font can be staged expressively and legibly.
Block letters are easier to read than cursive letters.
Capital letters should only be used to emphasise statements or in headings. Otherwise, evenly written combinations of upper- and lower-case letters help to create an even, legible typeface.
In between two lines, there should always be a line left empty. On the flipchart, checkered flipchart paper can provide help with that.
Separating instead of pushing - nobody likes to read words that fill an entire line. Small word portions make the text easier to digest.
The faithful flipchart
Got an important presentation coming up? Here are some tips to keep your audience attentive and motivated.
PowerPoint, Prezi or Keynote – whatever tool we use for our presentation, once the slides are overloaded with words, bullets or pictures, listeners have had enough. Let’s be honest, who wants to send their audience into a deep sleep? A picture reinforces the spoken word but, unfortunately, by piling on the pictures, we achieve the opposite. Even in these digital times, a flipchart is the only way to make a presentation really exciting. Here’s why:
- Fun – the group sees you visualise a strategy or mission on which you’ll be working together after the presentation, watching it take shape step by step before their eyes. It’s fun and creates pride. You’ve achieved something together.
- Dialogue – working with a flipchart invites discussion. The audience can join in.
- The bigger picture – visualisation makes it easy to spot causal connections, structures and patterns. After all, a picture says more than a thousand words!
- It sticks – any visualisation produced together deserves to be displayed where it’s highly visible. Put it up in the corridor or the coffee area: so the message sticks and can be picked up at the next meeting!
edding offers a wide range of markers specially designed for writing on flipchart paper, presentation paper and cards. The highly-pigmented ink, available in a range of brilliant colours, won’t bleed through to the next page.
The right nib
Our markers complete every office need. At edding, for every presentation surface there is a fitting marker that can be used to expressively visualise ideas. But when do you actually use which nib?
Marker with round nib
Markers with a round nib are very suitable for drawings and graphics. They are versatile and allow you to design entirely based on your own wishes. The stroke can be between 1.5 - 3 mm wide, depending on how you hold the pen, how hard you press and which surface you choose.
Did you know? Our glassboard marker in red is one of the most popular markers with round!
Marker with chisel nib
The chisel nib ensures particularly good legibility. The marker runs up in a wedge shape and therefore possesses a wide and a narrow side. Depending on how you hold the pen, the stroke will be thinner or wider. An expressive typeface is created by constantly leading the pen to the sheet at a 45° angle.
For every medium the right marker
Whiteboard marker
Whiteboard marker: The advantage of our whiteboard markers is that they can be dry wiped from whiteboards without trace. And once the ink is empty, the pen can easily be refilled.
More than classical black: Our whiteboard marker sets include many different colour combinations.
With frequent whiteboard use, the recommendation is to clean boards thoroughly every few weeks. The edding BMA1 board cleaner is superb for this. The whiteboard cleaner is also a lifesaver if permanent ink accidentally gets onto the whiteboard. If the board cleaner is not at hand, you should not use other cleaners as they might damage the whiteboard surface.
For smaller “accidents” such as a small stroke from a permanent marker, the ink can be dissolved by drawing a new line with whiteboard marker over the old one. As long as it is still wet, it can be removed.
