Permanent markers – the classic among eddings
Almost everyone knows it: our black marker, our edding 3000 permanent marker, simply called “edding” by most people. It comes in many colors with low-odor ink, is waterproof, and sticks to almost any surface. Want to write permanently on glass, plastic, or metal? This pen can do it with ease! It dries quickly and is resistant to abrasion, light, moisture, and heat. Of course, our permanent markers are available in different designs and stroke widths—individually and as a set.
Our permanent markers are available with round or wedge tips, which not only feel different when writing, but also look different on paper. In addition to the question of which tip you need, the line width is also important: from extra fine (0.75 mm) to extra thick (15 mm), we have everything you need!
A waterproof pen for all occasions
The edding permanent marker is a true pioneer! When school friends Volker Ledermann and Carl-Wilhelm Edding heard about a new type of felt-tip pen from Japan in 1960, they rolled up their sleeves and conquered the German market with their first “edding No. 1.” What was so special about it? It was waterproof. Suddenly, waterproof pens were in every pencil case and office drawer—and the company name edding became synonymous with permanent markers and waterproof markers.
Whether you want to label a moving box, mason jars, or tiny screws, we have the right permanent marker with a round tip or wedge tip for the job. Almost everyone is familiar with our classics such as the edding 3000 – but the range includes many more permanent models, each with their own special advantages: the practical mini markers, an industrial version specially designed for dusty and oily surfaces, our EcoLine made from 90% recycled plastic, for example the edding 21, and last but not least: our push-button pen, the edding retract 11. Perfect for anyone who tends to misplace the cap of their edding pen. We've left it off this model. Say goodbye to dried-up pen tips!
Finding the right permanent marker
Our eddings are available with round or wedge tips, which not only feel different when writing, but also look different on paper. The round tip is particularly easy to use and produces an even, harmonious writing style. In contrast to the round tip, the flattened edge of the chisel tip allows you to decide for yourself whether you want to create fine lines or broad strokes – depending on whether you write with the tip or the edge. Our tip for a particularly even writing style: always hold the chisel tip at a 45° angle to the baseline, and you'll succeed.
In addition to the question of which tip you need, the line width is also important. The rule is: the smaller the marking, the finer the tip must be. For small objects, a model with a delicate tip, such as the edding 404, is ideal. If you want to write thin lines with a permanent marker, choose the edding 400. For larger markings, for example on cardboard in warehouses, use an XXL version such as the edding 850. Our range includes line widths for every need – from extra fine (0.75 mm) to extra thick (15 mm).
Finally, all that remains is the agony of choosing a color. Almost all markers are available in black, red, blue, and green. Some pens, such as the edding 3000, are also available in many other colors that are worth trying out. How about something different for a change?
Why is there no edding permanent marker in white?
The ink in edding permanent markers is not particularly visible on dark surfaces, as it is not opaque enough. If you want to write in white on different materials, you should use an edding paint marker.
When alcohol is a solution
Our permanent markers are waterproof and designed to adhere permanently to almost all surfaces. But even we know that ink residues sometimes need to be removed.
For porous surfaces and textiles, alcohol-based solvents such as isopropanol or nail polish remover can also help in a pinch. However, extreme caution is advised here, as these solutions have a tendency to damage not only the paint but also the underlying material. So test on an inconspicuous area first. And how do you permanently remove permanent marker from your skin? Here, too, the answer is: with anything that contains alcohol. We recommend alcohol-based hand sanitizers to protect your skin.
Have you accidentally written on a whiteboard with your permanent marker? We'll let you in on a little trick that has a big effect: draw over the permanent marker lines with a whiteboard marker and wipe the whole thing dry. The solvents contained in the whiteboard marker can remove permanent markings. The sooner you use this trick, the more effective it is!
Proper storage, refilling, and disposal
Our permanent markers are long-lasting companions, if you let them be. They are best stored lying down at room temperature so that the ink is permanently distributed evenly. Stored in this way, the markers can be refilled without any problems as soon as they are empty. Either a manual or automatic system can be used for this. Take a look here to find out which refill system you need. The linked YouTube videos explain how it all works. In addition to the ink, the tips of many models are also replaceable. This means that you don't have to throw the whole pen in the trash when a tip breaks.

If a marker is permanently damaged, you can simply dispose of it in the residual waste. Exciting for companies with high edding “wear and tear”: our return boxes, which can be ordered free of charge. The broken markers are recycled to create new products from old material. In addition to our EcoLine, this is another contribution out of love for the environment.
And what's inside?
Let's take a closer look at the ingredients of our markers: The core is a plastic fiber filter that is saturated with ink. This consists of genuine pigmented ink based on alcohol and humectants. Special resins ensure that it is waterproof. Incidentally, the typical “edding” smell used to come from solvents such as toluene and xylene. We are constantly developing our products by optimizing the ingredients. For example, we have been using healthier alcohol-based alternatives such as isopropanol for over 15 years.
