Step-by-step
Step 1
First, wash the material to remove any fabric finish and leave it to dry. Print out the template and gather all your materials together. In our example, we used edding 4600 textile pens in various shades of yellow, red and blue, but you can simply choose whatever colours you like best.
Step 2
It’s a good idea to place a piece of cardboard underneath the fabric to stop the ink going through to the table. Place the template close by where you can easily see it, then copy it with the textile pen. Always let one colour dry before continuing with the next, to prevent them running into each other. If your fabric is quite fine, you can place the template under the material and trace over the motif.
Step 3
Once you’ve finished, the design can be heat-fixed by ironing it using the no-steam setting. So if your picture gets dusty over time, it will be resistant to wash cycles of up to 60°C.
Step 4
To hang the picture, secure it in the hoop, making sure the fabric is pulled taut. Trim the excess fabric in a circle around the hoop, leaving a generous margin. Push the excess fabric to the back and, if you want, cut out a circle of cardboard to fit and stick it on the back, so your picture is neatly secured in the frame.
