From plain to striking: a hand-painted cake platter

With the porcelain brush pens from edding, making DIY hand-painted plates is a piece of cake! As you can see from our example, the design doesn’t have to be intricate – just a short, meaningful quote and a few seemingly random dots are all it takes to decorate your plate effectively. It’s important that you only decorate the outer rim of the porcelain plate and not the area that comes into contact with food. The tip of the brushpen is very versatile, allowing you to produce fine lines as well as broad brush strokes. Even beginners can have a go at this creative project, because the design can be wiped off with a damp cloth and corrections made at any time before the decoration is heat-fixed in the oven. Once you’ve finished painting, let the ink dry for a short while, then bake the plate in a pre-heated oven.

Step-by-step

Step 1

You can see everything you need at a glance in our photo. We went for a simple design using no more than a black porcelain brush pen, but there are plenty of bright colours to choose from, so just pick your favourite shade.

Step 2

For best results, start by washing the plate with water and wipe over with methylated spirits. Thorough cleaning is essential in order to remove any invisible protective film applied during manufacture, as well as any fingerprints.

Step 3

We chose the quote “cake is the answer”. If you want to play it safe, you can sketch out the wording in pencil first and then go over it using the porcelain brush pen. Remember that it’s not a disaster if you make a mistake, because you can still make corrections at any time before the plate is baked in the oven – simply wipe off the ink with a damp cloth or cotton bud.

Step 4

Continue decorating the rim of your cake plate, using dots, lines and graphic patterns, for example.

Step 5

Once the design is finished, leave it to dry for 15 minutes. The next step is to fix the design in the oven. Place the plate on a cold oven rack, slide it into the preheated oven and bake it at 160°C for 25 minutes. Leave in the oven to cool afterwards. After baking, the decoration will be dishwasher-proof.
