Simple craft idea using empty cardboard tubes

Quick-and-easy craft ideas are often the nicest, as these charming deer made from empty toilet-roll tubes demonstrate. Beautifully arranged amongst moss and pine cones, this autumnal display can be created in next to no time and is sure to catch everyone’s eye. The deer have been designed using edding acrylic markers. The range also includes the 3D double liner - a flexible tube with two different-sized nibs capable of creating effects that are simply stunning. Step-by-step

Step 1

For the design, we’ve used acrylic markers and the acrylic 3D double liner in different colours. Before you start colouring, you need to activate the acrylic markers as follows: shake the marker with the cap on until the mixing ball can be heard inside. Next, carefully pump the marker up and down until ink appears in the nib. Test the marker on a piece of scrap paper.

Step 2

Print out the template, cut it out and use a pencil to draw the outline of the motif on the front and back of the cardboard tube.

Step 3

Cut the cardboard tube along the line so that the front and back become separated from each other.

Step 4

Snap off two small sections from the twig for use as antlers. Stick them onto the inside of the cardboard roll using hot glue.

Step 5

Use the medium white acrylic marker to draw the cheeks and ears.

Step 6

Now it’s time to give your little deer a face. Use the fine black acrylic marker for the eyes and nose.

Step 7

Use the fine acrylic marker in opulent turquoise to draw a scarf. First, draw the outline before colouring it in.

Step 8

Take the white edding double liner and draw narrow white stripes and dots on the scarf. Do this by removing the cap from the thin nib and squeezing the tube gently.

Step 9

Simply let your imagination run wild. You can craft the second deer in the same way, adding individual touches to your design – such as a scarf in classy mauve with a gold-coloured border. To round things off, stand your cute little deer in a dish lined with moss.
