How to give your old furniture a fresh new look

With the right ideas and materials, old pieces of furniture can be transformed into stylish new objects. We show you how to copy this upcycling idea with the help of our permanent spray. Perhaps you’ve got an old sideboard tucked away in the garage or basement, for example, just waiting to be given a new lease of life. Scratches are no problem at all – they can be easily retouched with the help of edding furniture markers which come in a wide range of wood colours. The permanent spray has excellent coverage, is quick-drying and is perfect for decorating objects of all kinds.

Step-by-step

Step 1

You can see everything you need in this photo. For spraying, you will need edding 5200 permanent spray in a spray colour of your choice. In our example, we’ve used white (colour code 922) and pastel pink (914). To remove any existing scratches, use one of our furniture markers in a matching colour.

Step 2

If your furniture has got scratched during its lifetime, you can easily repair it using edding’s 8900 furniture marker. The ink’s not only highly opaque, smudge-proof and waterproof, it’s also quick-drying. It comes in 13 different wood colours. For deeper scratches, edding also has a specialised furniture repair wax kit.

Step 3

Take the furniture apart and remove the handles. First, give everything a good clean and sand down any uneven areas using the sandpaper.

Step 4

For the striped design on the door use masking tape to create stripes so that, when you spray, you only spray the areas that aren’t covered with masking tape, rather than the whole surface.

Step 5

Before you spray, make sure your work area is well protected by covering it with film or paper. In our Spray basics section, we’ve got important tips to help you achieve the perfect spraying technique. We recommend you spray at a distance of approx. 25 cm in a criss-cross motion to ensure as even coverage as possible. Start with the pastel pink spray and spray the door evenly. Let the surface dry thoroughly.
