Pens for painting stones

What's the deal with painted stones?

Have you ever stumbled across a painted stone while out for a walk? Then there's a very good chance you've found a traveling stone (also called a wandering stone). These are stones that someone has painted to bring joy to others. The idea is that the stone is carried around for a while and then taken to the next location, thus spreading the joy further.

There are many other types of painted stones besides the traveling stone: lucky charms, mourning stones, wishing stones, mandala stones or garden stones are just a few examples where stones are painted with pens.

Painting stones is a wonderful creative activity and always an expression of your personality and feelings. Writing on stones is also a very popular reason to buy pens for painting stones. There are many occasions for painted stones, such as a birthday, a wedding, a funeral, a simple thank you, or just to unleash your creativity.

Painted Stones for Beginners

Painting stones with simple motifs

There's usually not much space on a stone like this, which is why simple designs or short sayings are well-suited for painting stones as lucky charms. You can find simple symbols in our scribble template library .

Especially as a beginner, you should try to decorate your stones with a motif. Many motifs look best on the stone if you limit yourself to two or three colors per stone. Placed together, they then easily create a unified look, even if the motifs are different.

Stones with sayings

One or two words are usually enough when you're writing on stones. Everyone likes to read words and sayings like "Thank you," "You're great!", or "Keep it up!" Painted stones with sayings are very popular as lucky charms.

Show your connection to your homeland with words from your dialect: "I mog di!", "Moin", "Machts nüscht" or "Guggmol" look great on painted stones!

Painting faces on stones

The great thing about stones is that they already have a round shape. This makes it easy to paint faces on them without needing a template.

Simply draw two eyes, a mouth, and if you like, a nose on your stone.

Stones appropriate for the season

Christmas motifs look just as good on stones as Easter bunnies, flowers, suns, pumpkins, ghosts, or rainbows. Depending on the season, other simple motifs are also suitable.

Think about which symbol would be fitting for the current season and draw it on your stone. It makes a great seasonal decoration or a lovely surprise for a passerby.

Painting stones for the garden

Plant markers made from painted stones are a real eye-catcher in the flower bed. Thanks to opaque acrylic paints, you can even paint lighter shapes on a dark background.

In this example, the light green peas are painted onto the darker green of the pod. The color gradient is achieved by blending the still-wet paint with a finger. The white outline makes the motif stand out nicely from the rest of the stone.

Painting stones as animals

Painting fish on stones is not difficult at all, because the round shape of the stones means you only need a fin, scales and an eye.

But you can also paint other animals on stones. Limit yourself to the basic shapes of your favorite animal, or just paint the animal's face on the stone.

Painting stones with children

Simple designs are ideal for painting stones with children. Animal motifs, in particular, are a lot of fun for kids.

Insects such as ladybugs, bees or other beetles look particularly good on round stones.

Stones with flowers and floral patterns

You can easily paint branches with leaves, blossoms, or fruit onto stones. In our example, we first painted abstract shapes like circles and arcs onto the stone and then added plant motifs.
