edding launches the ‘edding Wall of Fame’, a new digital platform for art, self-expression and inspiration

To mark its 60th anniversary in 2020, edding has set up a new digital online platform at www.wall-of-fame.com, where users can draw, share their art publicly, express themselves and find inspiration.

The edding Wall of Fame is a community concept – a shared digital canvas for anyone, anywhere in the world, to express themselves together with other creative and artistic individuals on a range of themes. Users draw straight onto their own screen (desktop, tablet or smartphone) via an intuitive interface that resembles a graphic design program. But what makes it so engaging is that the digital creative experience is in real time and actually imitates the look and feel of the edding permanent markers. The edding Wall of Fame recreates everything just as it is in the original – from the list of coded colours available from dealers through to the different stroke widths of the edding permanent markers for drawing on different surfaces.

As Per Ledermann, Chairman of the Board at edding AG, explains: “For six decades, we’ve been striving to give people the means to express their thoughts, desires and ideas. And now, to mark our 60th anniversary, the Wall of Fame gives everyone the opportunity to do this digitally, in collaboration with other creative individuals around the world.”

Heide Schiene, International B2C Marketing Manager at edding, adds: “Our aim is for our Wall of Fame to inspire large numbers of people to be creative, especially during these challenging times, by giving them barrier-free access to interact with others the world over. By transforming real products into a digital experience, we are reaffirming our image as a creative brand and are able to reach out to new target groups. We already have plans for extra features on our Wall of Fame – for example, we’re hoping to integrate and customise more products.”

edding has put its trust in the digital expertise of Demodern – specialists in creative technologies – to undertake this special anniversary project. Demodern has been responsible for the concept, design and technical implementation of the platform, which actually took more than 15 months to develop. This browser-based application (which works like an app) presented them with specific challenges, including how to simulate the sensation of using actual edding products, i.e. how to make the colour effects and the feeling of handling the writing implements as realistic as possible. In addition, the spatial realisation opens up a whole host of possibilities for experiencing and extending the platform, both now and in the future.

These were challenges that the Demodern team was more than happy to take on, as Alexander El-Meligi, Managing Partner and Creative Director at Demodern, confirms: “Together with our client, edding, we’ve created a really special brand experience, and we’re looking forward to watching how the launch of the edding Wall of Fame takes shape. We hope that our platform will give creative and artistic individuals not only the opportunity to present their art and make it visible, but also to create collaborative art across borders. For us, this is what the experience is all about. That’s why we placed so much emphasis on making it exciting by using the latest web technologies – not only for the artists, but also for those interested in art, who can observe the artists in real time.”

Showcases by artists

In time for the launch in June, edding has recruited artists Laura Klinke, Reyhan Yildirim, and Pablo Fontagnier (aka Hombre SUK), to start the ball rolling and generate interest in the wall by displaying their visually stunning drawings in illustration, graffiti and comic/manga styles on the theme “Show your Love”.

Using the application and weblink

Any Internet user can become a part of the edding Wall of Fame and immortalise their drawings as part of the larger overall work of art. Users of this browser-based 3D web application can join other artists and communicate with them on a variety of themed walls. For each theme, artists can choose from a selection of different markers in the edding range. The unique characteristics of each edding marker are realistically captured in digital form. And if a piece of art particularly appeals to someone, they can “fame” it (the Wall of Fame equivalent of “like”) or save it to their personal profile and share it with friends.
