Step-by-step

Step 1
You can see everything you need for this project in the photo below. In our example, we’ve chosen to use edding permanent spray in cream white and classy mauve plus edding 5100 medium acrylic markers in warm beige, pastel yellow, classy mauve, sunny yellow and mellow mint. There are, however, many other colours available, so choose your favourites.

Step 2
Before you start spraying, cover your workspace with protective sheeting or paper. Next, shake the spray cans vigorously for around 3 minutes until you can clearly hear the mixing balls rattling around inside. If you take a break from painting – even a short one - you'll need to re-activate the spray cans each time you resume. Our Permanent spray basics page on our website also includes all you need to know on how to create the perfect spray paint finish. Once you’re ready, spray the frame of your shelving unit in classy mauve and then apply a cream white base coat to each of the shelves.

Step 3
After you’ve left the paint to dry, you can get creative with your acrylic markers. To activate your markers, shake each pen with the cap still on until you can hear the small ball rattling inside the pen. Next, carefully press the nib up and down a few times on a piece of scrap paper until the ink fills the tip. You can also try out a few practice marks on a piece of scrap paper. Just let your creative juices flow and decorate your shelves with rainbows, little hearts or any other pattern.

Step 4
Once you’re happy with all your shelves, leave the acrylic paint to dry briefly before assembling your unit.
