Mother’s Day without flowers? Almost unthinkable! This year, why not create and design your very own flower box? Use edding acrylic markers to give a plain wooden box a truly personal touch. The markers’ rich colours let you transform simple objects into unique, lovingly detailed gifts.

Step-by-step

Step 1

You can see the materials you need at a glance in this photo. Pick your favourite colours from the acrylic marker range. In our example, we’ve used the set of 5 medium edding 5100 acrylic markers.

Step 2

Draw your chosen design (“Thank you, mum”, for example) on a sheet of paper. Next, apply some pressure as you shade the back of the sheet of paper with a soft pencil – this will give you a layer of graphite which you can then transfer onto your wooden box.

Step 3

Take the sheet of paper featuring your chosen design and place it, with the design uppermost, where you want it to go on the wooden box, securing it with adhesive tape. Go over the lines using the hard pencil. By applying pressure you will be able to transfer the motif onto the wood. Carefully remove the sheet of paper – you’ll soon see the lettering on the surface.

Step 4

Before you start colouring in your design, you’ll need to activate your acrylic markers as follows: shake the marker with the cap still on until you can clearly hear the mixing ball rattling inside. Next, carefully prime your marker by pumping the nib up and down on a separate sheet of paper until ink appears in the nib. Test out your marker on a separate sheet. It’s now time to get decorating! Thanks to the creamy, opaque ink, you’ll achieve uniform results effortlessly. Allow the ink to dry thoroughly.

Step 5

You can now let your creativity run wild as you embellish your flower box by adding more colours. The ink dries quickly so you can apply several coats without any problem.

Step 6

Line your flower box with black plant film to make sure it is well protected. This will keep the wood dry. Next, fill the box with vermiculite and compost.

Step 7

All you need to do now is plant your favourite flowers or herbs in your box. And there you have it – your personalised Mother’s Day flower gift is ready! A gift that’s guaranteed to come from the heart.
