Zendoodle patterns – now even on porcelain!

Painting porcelain for relaxation

Everyone’s talking about Zentangle® lately; a form of artistic meditation from the USA that brings meditative relaxation and emotional balance to everyday life. Build the patterns by starting off with just a few strokes and connect blocks of pattern together until little by little you have produced a small work of art. We extracted designs from a Zendoodle piece drawn using a black fineliner and tried them out on porcelain using the edding porcelain brushpen. Needless to say, we were very impressed with the results! The delicate lines and patterns look beautiful on bowls, plates or mugs.

Depending on you colour preference, there are different porcelain brushpen sets to choose from: warm shades of red, cool blues and greens or mixed colours. The pens are ready to use straight away and work best on light-coloured porcelain.

Step-by-step

Step 1

Start by washing the crockery with water and wipe over with methylated spirits. Thorough cleaning is essential for removing any invisible protective film applied during manufacture.

Step 2

Decorating your crockery: The porcelain brushpens are ready for use without any need to pump the ink, and the creamy application ensures an even finish without any drips. Note: paint mugs and cups on the outer surface only, and plates only around the edge.

Step 3

Start Zen-doodling by using simple lines to create loops. You can download the template for this pattern from our website (Template 1 - Template 2). The tip of the brushpen is very flexible so it's easy to create very fine lines or broad brush strokes. Don’t worry if you make a mistake, you can simply wipe it off with a damp cloth or a cotton bud. Corrections can be made at any time until you're ready to fix the design by baking in the oven.

Step 4

After leaving the lines to dry for a short time, colour in the spaces in the pattern by forming circles in the same way, working inwards until they're coloured in.

Step 5

When the design is complete, leave it to dry for 15 minutes. Then place the piece on a cold oven shelf and bake it in a pre-heated oven at 160°C for 25 minutes. Leave it in the oven to cool afterwards.
