Paint on Glass with Markers

Whether you want to decorate windows, vases, or drinking glasses – the right pens make all the difference. Here you'll learn about suitable markers for painting on glass.

Glass is a versatile material that is excellent for creative projects. The smooth surface of glass objects gives them an elegant aesthetic

The first glass vessels were used for storage. Over time, glass art evolved, and today we find glass in the form of windows, vases, jewelry, and much more. Whether practical or simply beautiful, glass offers creative possibilities for drawing with the right pens.

Before you start, you should consider whether your artwork should be wipeable from the glass or permanent:

  1. Erasable drawings:  Erasable markers are most often used for drawing on windows , as they need to be cleaned eventually. However, the glass surface of picture frames is also suitable for creating new artwork again and again with edding chalk markers .
  2. Permanent designs:  For permanent artwork on glass, such as painted drinking glasses, vases, or screw-top jars, you should use permanent markers. We recommend edding gloss paint markers and porcelain markers.

Glass painting pens

Whether you want to decorate windows, vases, or drinking glasses, the right pens make all the difference. Here are three types of pens you should consider:

  1. Chalk markers (wipeable): edding chalk markers are suitable for temporary decorations on windows and other smooth surfaces such as mirrors. These markers are filled with water-based liquid chalk and can be wiped clean with a damp cloth. Perfect for seasonal decorations or special occasions.
  2. Gloss paint markers (waterproof) : Our paint markers are particularly color-intensive and therefore ideal for dark, smooth, and transparent bottles made of green or brown glass. Paint markers are available in many vibrant colors: as a gold edding for elegant glass decorations or as a white edding for simple designs.
  3. Porcelain pens (dishwasher safe): edding porcelain brush pens are ideal for painting glasses and bottles that go in the dishwasher. The ink must be dried in the oven for this purpose.

Step-by-step instructions

How to paint glass

Step 1: Preparation

Cleanliness is paramount: Before you begin, thoroughly clean the glass. Otherwise, dust and dirt could impair the paint's adhesion later.

Choose the right pens for your glass project. In the previous paragraph, we listed a selection of pens for different types of glass painting.

Step 3: Prepare the template

Working with templates on clear glass is very easy. Simply fix your template to the back of the glass or pane and trace it.

Feel free to also check out our templates  or our template generator and then transfer your design onto the glass.

Step 2: Activate markers

After you have chosen a marker, the gloss paint marker for waterproof drawings and the chalk marker for wipeable glass painting still need to be activated.

Shake the marker with the cap closed and slowly press the tip of the marker several times until the tip is filled with ink.

Step 4: Painting the glass

If you're using a template, simply transfer the lines onto the glass. Then remove your template.

If you're working without a template, you can just start painting.
