Football fans aren’t the only ones who’ll love this rather special upcycling idea. We’ve made a hanging basket using an old football – a fun, creative idea not just during the Euro Cup. Even once the final whistle has sounded, you can still enjoy the beautiful flowers in our DIY hanging basket. The edding permanent spray is ideal for transforming a football into a plant container. We sprayed some parts of the football in copper. You’ll be amazed at how good a discarded football can look in this warm, shiny metallic shade. Of course, all kinds of ball – from basketballs to volleyballs – are perfect for off-beat upcycling ideas. A small tip: make sure you ask the kids for permission before you turn their ball into a decoration!

Step-by-step

Step 1

Make sure you have all the materials you need before starting. The ball should be as clean and free of dust as possible before you start spray painting.

Step 2

Use the cutter to cut out some of the football’s segments, moving along the seams until the opening is large enough for your plant.

Step 3

Stuff the ball with newspaper to preserve its shape. Next, carefully cover with sticky tape all the surfaces of the ball you don’t want to paint. Cover your work surface with sheets. To make sure that the paint adheres properly, start by preparing the ball’s surface with universal primer. We recommend that you spray paint from a distance of approx. 25 cm using horizontal and vertical strokes to ensure more even coverage. Step 4

Leave the primer to dry for approx. 30 minutes. Once it’s dry, spray the ball’s surface with the permanent spray in copper. Leave the ball to dry thoroughly. Continue to paint the other surfaces in the same way until your upcycling project is finished.

Step 5

Puncture the ball on three opposite sides with the punch pliers and pull the ribbon through. The holes should not be placed too close to the edge of the ball.

Step 6

Pull the ribbon through the holes. To prevent water from leaking out when watering, line the hanging basket with plastic film before putting a beautiful plant inside. Your hanging basket is now finished!
