Step-by-step
Step 1
To make this grapefruit canvas you’ll need the edding acrylic 3D double liner set. This set contains five edding 5400 acrylic 3D double liners in traffic white, traffic yellow, telemagenta, opulent turquoise and black. Print out the template and photocopy it to the desired size if necessary. You can see everything you need at a glance in our photo.
Step 2
Place the motif behind the canvas. Art canvases usually come with small wooden wedges, which can be inserted at the back to hold the template firmly in place and prevent it slipping. Put a light source behind both canvas and template, then trace the template.
Step 3
Now it’s time to get started with the acrylic 3D double liner in opulent turquoise. To open the double liner, first of all you need to remove both tamper-proof strips which serve as a secure seal for the caps. Now remove the cap without putting too much pressure on the flexible tube. Please be aware that one end of the pen must always be closed during use, to prevent the ink accidentally leaking out. Now fill in the background using the broad tip in opulent turquoise, letting it fade out as you reach the top of your canvas.
Step 4
To create a textured surface, draw thick lines using the broad tip.
Step 5
Use kitchen towel to dab the still wet paint on the upper edge of the painting to achieve a nice effect. Then leave it to dry thoroughly.
Step 6
Now use the fine tip of the acrylic 3D double liner in traffic yellow to draw the outline and fill in the grapefruit peel. It’s best to apply a little bit more acrylic paste here so that you can mix in another colour during the next step.
Step 7
Next, grab the acrylic 3D double liner in telemagenta and apply some paste to the still wet yellow-coloured parts. To blend colours into each other, simply use the tip of the double liner to mix in a new colour, or use kitchen paper or a brush to help you. If you have a disposable glove at home, you could also try blending colours with your finger to achieve a colour gradient typical of a grapefruit.
Step 8
Use the fine tip in telemagenta for the outline of the grapefruit segments, and the broad one for painting in the flesh. Don’t pause between contouring and filling in – the paste needs to stay wet if you are to achieve the desired outcome. Feel free to add some flashes of white between the magenta areas to enhance the look of the fruit flesh.
Step 9
Add a rough shadow in black under the grapefruit. Using both marker tips, mix the black paste with traffic yellow. If you want to, smudge it with the kitchen towel or gloved finger.
Step 10
Using the fine tip, add touches of white to the grapefruit to give it a much more realistic appearance. You can also add them to the shadow to create beautiful reflections and highlights.
