Brown paper offcuts to brighten up your journal

With the new year having only just begun, now’s the ideal time to capture the year’s upcoming highlights in your journal. Maybe there are activities and events that you’re really looking forward to, such as birthdays, anniversaries, holidays or other celebrations? You can add them all (and much more besides) to your journal using edding gel rollers in vibrant colours. It’s easy to jazz up pages using any brown paper offcuts left over when you wrapped your Christmas presents – they’re much too good to throw away! The white gel roller and the metallic colours look particularly striking on dark-coloured paper.

Step-by-step

Step 1

In our example, we used the edding 2185 gel roller in different metallic shades and in white. The template is available for you to download. Simply print out and place in position as required.

Step 2

If the pages of your journal are relatively thin, you can simply trace over the template using a pencil to transfer it into your journal. Next, use the gel roller to outline all of the sections and lines of text. The gel rollers are also perfect for colouring in smaller motifs such as the pair of boots you can see here.

Step 3

We’ve used various metallic colours for the headline, including blue metallic, red metallic and green metallic. It’s best to start by drawing the outline of the letters before colouring them in.

Step 4

You can create beautiful effects with a perfectly-sized piece of brown paper. Stick it onto the page using washi tape and write on it with a white gel roller –your highlights for the new year, perhaps. Again, the metallic-coloured gel rollers are ideal for outlines and embellishments. Motifs that run across the brown and white paper are also highly effective as they create a link between the two sections.
