You can never have too many tote bags! Not only are they incredibly useful, they also fold up really small and will fit into any handbag. But they needn’t just be practical: why not design your own tote bag by adding a unique pattern – and put those shop-bought bags to shame! All you’ll need is an edding textile marker and our easy-to-follow step-by-step instructions on how to make a stylish, customised bag. Even if you’re new to this, you’ll still end up with a fantastic result. When you’ve finished drawing, iron the bag (without steam) to fix the design and make it wash-resistant up to 60°C.

Step-by-step

Step 1

First, wash the bag to remove any finishing agents in the fabric and leave to dry. Insert the cardboard into the bag to prevent ink bleeding through to the back.

Step 2

Using the textile pen, draw leaf motifs all over the bag, ensuring that the pattern is symmetrical both vertically and horizontally. Draw the outlines first and then colour in one half of each leaf however you wish.
