The perfect barbecue-themed gift

At long last, the days are getting warmer and the evenings are getting longer, so now the time has come to start thinking about garden parties.

What could be nicer than receiving an invitation from a friend or neighbour to join them for a barbecue? But the big question is: should you bring something tasty for the buffet, or a homemade gift?

We definitely prefer the idea of giving a gift with “great taste”, such as glass bottles filled with homemade ketchup or barbecue sauce – so good, it would almost be a shame to open them! And with such special contents, only handmade labels will do, of course. Making attractive labels is really easy with edding gloss paint markers. These pens are brilliant for creating paint-like, shimmering designs and lettering on smooth surfaces such as glass, metal or plastic. There are five different stroke widths to choose from and up to 18 completely opaque colours, including a variety of sparkling metallic shades.

Step-by-step

Step 1

Clean the glass bottle thoroughly, removing any existing labels. Cut out a rectangle of chalkboard vinyl in the required size.

Step 2

Before you begin writing, test out a couple of letters first to see which style you prefer. Write the contents of the jar on the label and let the ink dry for a short time. For bold lettering like ‘ketchup’ or ‘barbecue’, we recommend the thicker edding 750 (stroke width: 2-4 mm), and for finer writing the edding 751 (1-2 mm) is best. Stick the labels onto the jars – and that’s all there is to it!

Step 3

We made the labels on this wooden board from chalkboard vinyl and added stylish writing with white chalk markers. So whatever the host chooses to serve (our selection shows salt, olives and oil), a helpful hint about what's in the little bowls will avoid any confusion.

The great thing about the chalk markers is that the ink can be wiped off again with a damp cloth at any time, so when the next party comes around you can add new lettering.
