Make your own cake mix in a jar

Make your own cake mix in a jar

A homemade treat for cake lovers

Cake mixes don’t always enjoy the best reputation ‒ but because this cake-in-a-jar is homemade, it’s rather special. It would make a great present that your family and friends would be delighted to receive (as long as you’re not tempted to eat it yourself beforehand!).You could even add your own personalised label. The best pen for drawing on glass is the edding gloss paint marker. With its paint-like, opaque ink, it’s the perfect choice for all smooth surfaces, even dark ones.

Here’s what you’ll need to make your cake-in-a-jar

  • 1 glass jar – approx. capacity 500 ml
  • 1 cake recipe (ideally, choose one with ingredients such as nuts, rolled oats, brown sugar, etc.), plus the dry ingredients for the cake
  • edding 751 gloss paint marker (approx. 1 – 2 mm stroke width) e.g. in white, copper or black; alternatively, the edding 750 gloss paint marker (approx. 2 – 4 mm) in a colour of your choice
  • Suitably-sized self-adhesive letters
  • Pair of tweezers

So easy to make
  • Before you start, here’s how to activate your edding gloss paint marker: Shake the marker firmly with the cap still on. Place the nib on some scrap paper and carefully pump it up and down a few times until ink fills the nib. Start by writing a few test strokes on the scrap paper. And don’t forget to always replace the cap securely after use.
  • First, layer all the ingredients in the jar one at a time. Each layer should be nice and even.
  • For the decorative wording, stick the letters onto the jar – we chose the word CAKE.
  • Using a gloss paint marker (shown here in white), make a rectangular frame around the wording, colouring over the entire area including the letters. Leave to dry for a short while.
  • Finally, remove the letters carefully with the tweezers, taking care not to damage the white surround.

Hints and tips: The baking instructions and the additional ingredients required can be written on a tag and attached to the jar.
