edding markers: European frontrunners

A recent study of the European marker market by the German market-research company, GfK, reveals that edding marker pens need to be fluent writers not just in German, but in Spanish, Italian and Dutch too.

(Ahrensburg, March 2007) Last year, Nuremburg-based market-research company Gesellschaft für Konsumgüterforschung (GfK) carried out a study of the marker market in seven European countries. The result: with a market share of approx. 34% of total sales, edding was the “European” frontrunner in 2006 with an overall standing way ahead of all other suppliers. First place went to the classic edding 3000 permanent marker, with the edding 750 paint marker hard on its heels.

Germany, France, Spain, Belgium, the UK, Italy and the Netherlands: these were the seven countries that were included in GfK’s recent study of the marker market. Its research revealed that almost one quarter of all markers sold within these seven nations originated from edding. It goes to show that - for years now - the company has been making a name for itself in other countries besides Germany, its place of origin.

It is true that the company’s market leadership is most impressively in demonstrated in Germany, where edding’s market share is 70% of all markers sold. Yet, the edding 3000 permanent marker is the most widely sold marker in the Netherlands and in Spain, where edding is seeing an upward trend overall.

About edding AG
The company was founded in 1960 by Carl-Wilhelm Edding and Volker Detlef Ledermann. The very first product – the legendary “edding Allround-Marker NO.1” – became the forerunner of whole generations of markers. Today, edding is a synonym for markers and an epitome of top-quality products “made in Germany”. Every edding “specialist” is characterised by its quality, its reliability and its vast creativity. Along with edding – the premium brand for markers and for felt and fibre-tip pens – the company is also a global player under its Legamaster brand. Legamaster, too, has successfully established its place in the market with its range of highly practical products for visual communication.
